Vintage Chairs

In-depth story

Doing this project renewed my interest in vintage and retro culture. A round little chair in Trippies caught my eye (sadly, it was sold!) so I decided to present to you some of these retro/space age chairs that are becoming a rare sight. Many of these classic pieces have been reissued or reproduced, an evidence of their enduring popularity. These cute little morsels strike a chord with the young and old, whether you grew up in the sixties or nineties. Let’s take a closer look at the chairs that defined a generation.

The Egg
The Egg was designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen in Copenhagen. It was originally cast in plaster. Today, the synthetic shell is padded with cold foam and covered with fabric or different types of leather resting on a star-shaped aluminium base. For those of us who appreciates the human touch, take note: Each egg is lovingly handsewn by skilled craftsmen.

Ovalia Egg Chair
The Ovalia Egg Chair was designed by Henrik-Thor Larsen. It was first introduced at a Scandinavian Furniture Fair in 1968 and stopped production in 1978. It was re-released in 2008, with not much deviation from the original. The updated polyester and fiber glass swivel lounge chair comes fully upholstered, with a speaker system to boot, so you can enjoy music in your little space. Now that’s what I call creature comfort.

The Bubble Chair
Ever wondered what it feels like to sit inside a bubble? The Bubble Chair is the answer. This round ball of a chair was designed by Finnish furniture designer Eero Aarnio in 1968. It is made of acrylic or steel frame and leather or polyurethane fabric cushions. The chair is suspended from above leading to a floating or bubble-like sensation.

The Ball Chair
Somewhat similar to the Bubble Chair, the Ball Chair was also designed by Eero Aarnio in 1963. The Ball Chair, known as the globe chair, is famous for its unconventional shape. It is considered a classic of industrial design. More recent versions have increased the overall size and added interesting features including music and MP3 player integration.
